Weekly newsletter helping people navigate in this disoriented world, make progress and become more rational.
Hello online friends,
It’s me, Ivaylo Durmonski. And this is the 22nd edition of Unstuck. A weekly newsletter designed to help people navigate in this disoriented world, make progress, and become more rational. By sharing the lessons I learn from the books I read (and other interesting things), I want to help more people find direction in this directionless world.
During the summer, I decided to focus on updating my older content, figure some stuff out related to the site, and finishing my first online course. Don’t worry, I will still publish new summaries but you will also see some older ones in the mix of links below.
[NEW] How to Read a Book by Charles Van Doren & Mortimer J. Adler: The problem with modern society is that little training has been done in regards extracting wisdom out of text. You were told to read a book, “but how exactly?” is something you need to (hopefully) figure out on your own. Fortunately, classic books like ow to Read a Book exist to shed a light on reading.
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson: An honest self-help book that’s totally different from anything you’ve read before. Mark Manson throws all advice our minds were fed all these years – positive thinking and follow your passion – in the trash and explains in detail what you should really do if you want to be happier and live a fulfilling life.
How To Read More Books In A Distracted World: “When you sit on your butt to read books you’re working on your concentration muscles. Every time you’re not playing on your smart device and you’re with a company of a good book, you’re becoming better at focusing.”
Surgical Reading: How to Read 12 Books at Once: Yep, it seems that reading more than 1 book at a time is possible thanks to surgical reading. This is “a process I’ve developed called surgical reading and it means that when I’m reading a non-fiction book, I focus on locating and removing the most valuable pieces of information from it quickly as possible.”
How to explain anything to anyone: 4 steps to clearer communication: “You’re having a chat with someone, and they’re telling you something about a subject they’re very interested in or they know a lot about, and you’re following along. Then, at some stage you realize you kind of lost the thread of what they’re saying … You realize you have absolutely no idea what they’re talking about.”
My weekly newsletter is sponsored by my dearest members and Patrons. If you want to support my online project and help me produce even more eye-opening content you can become a member yourself. This way, you’ll gain access to all of the book summaries published on my site and give me the strength to continue doing what I do best – convert long books into short practical lessons.
Instead of weekly, I’m also sending my newsletter twice a month during the summer – expect the next on 19.08.2020, after that on 02.09.2020…
I hope you are all healthy wherever you are in the world.
