Weekly newsletter helping people navigate in this disoriented world, make progress and become more rational.

Hello online friends,

It’s me, Ivaylo Durmonski. And this is the 9th edition of Unstuck. A weekly newsletter designed to help people navigate in this disoriented world, make progress and become more rational. By sharing the lessons I learn from the books I read (and other interesting things), I want to help more people find direction in this directionless world.

Everywhere I look (online), people say that you should use the time we have now, to get better at something: to start a business, to become the next Picasso, to create a YouTube channel, to learn Vietnamese…

Reading all of this pseudo motivation leads to the following inner dialog:

  • Me: “If I don’t have a running business after the pandemic is over, I’m a failure. But what should I do?”
  • Also me: “Who cares. Just start something. Online businesses all over the world are crushing it! Get up at 4 AM every morning and just sell shit…”

But that shouldn’t be the case for everyone. You don’t necessarily have to become a risk-taking sleep-lacking entrepreneur. You can use the time to unwind. To take a break from your busy office lifestyle. To meditate. To play with your kids. To teach them how to draw or how to fix the refrigerator.

Yes, starting a business sounds sexy and will probably look cool on your Twitter feed. However, usually, the things that really matter are the ones that shouldn’t appear on social media in the first place – like laying on the floor and cuddling with your children while watching a movie.

Or in other words, don’t feel bad about not starting a business. Just make sure you’re spending your time wisely.

Book Summary:

  • Barking Up the Wrong Tree by Eric Barker: “Everything you know about achieving success is mostly wrong,” says Eric Barker. “So what should I do to flourish?” A couple of things: Don’t try to be Batman, be a jerk (sometimes), and create a pirate-like environment in your organization.

Article:

  • Impostor Syndrome: The Reason You Feel Like a Fraud: Ever felt like you don’t belong? Like you don’t deserve the awards, the praise from your colleagues, and your salary? I often feel the same way. Hopefully, my story will help you overcome your inner disbelief and realize that you’re not a fraud.

Weekly Finds:

  • Yes, you’re doing enough: “We aren’t on a long weekend or a sabbatical. We’re in a pandemic. Our world changed overnight…” See why you shouldn’t listen to the social media gurus during the pandemic.
  • Investing Master Class: “You don’t have to read a bunch of books to become a smart investor,” says Nicholas Braun. Extremely short and helpful (free) master class that will teach you the basics of investing.
  • An Astronaut’s Guide to Self Isolation: Four useful steps from an astronaut to stay productive in self-isolation. It turns out that it’s not that complicated to live without human contact for a while.
